Las Vegas Trip
|
| |
First I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Las Vegas Cricket Club for hosting us. These guys are not only very good cricketers, but they are outstanding hosts. Adnan Khwaja, and Aurangzeb (Captain), ensured the matches were arranged appropriately, while being flexible with the schedule. Our team found the LCC guys, very friendly and easy going, but tough competitors on the field:
Our First Game was on Thanksgiving Day; however the game did not turn out to be as Thankful to the SLCC. Our guys were a bit tired from the drive and were not used to the conditions. We still put up a good total of 125 in 25 Overs, with some good knocks by Kamran (24), and Nasir (19). In reply Las Vegas CC, were able to achieve the total in 15 overs. Jehangir continued from his aggressive bowling, with some heavy hitting, and was the major contributor to LVCC's total.
The second game was a longer version of 35 overs, and was played on Friday, day after thanksgiving. The guys had good overnight rest, and knew the conditions a little better. LVCC won the toss and elected to bat. They put up a strong total of 250 to chase. SLCC were on their way for the chase with outstanding knocks by Kamran (56), and Shahid (40). With 6 overs remaining and 70 runs to score, bad light stopped the play, and the Captains decided to call the Match a draw.
With One Loss, and One Draw, the SLCC were looking for a win in their last match on Saturday. SLCC won the toss and elected to bat. At 88 for 2, in 16 overs, the team was set for a good total. However with a middle order collapse, the team was all out for 128. Major contributors were Rahid (41), and Saeed (30). With 128 on the board, the team was still very keen on winning. A hostile opening spell by Rajesh, had LVCC at 10 for 5. Our strategy to hold Rajesh back for later overs, fired back, and LVCC's middle order batted superbly to win the game in the 16th over.
All in all, we had fun, and really enjoyed Cricket. Although we didn't win the games, we at least won on the Slot machines.
Finally I would like to thank the following individuals:
Ali Raza -- Ali provided lodging, transportation for some of our players, and also played for
us.
Sikandar Khan -- Sikandar was a member of our team in the past. He flew in from New York, to play for us.
And all the folks from the LVCC team who helped us with batting, bowling, and fielding, as we were short a few players.
Cheers,
Nasir Khan (Captain)

Match 2: Salt Lake Cricket Union versus Las Vegas Cricket Club
After a good night’s rest, the Xpress were positive in achieving a win in their second match despite the lack of players. The Xpress were unfortunate to play with 9 players on both days and the lack of two players showed in their batting attack. Albeit, the Xpress were hoping to offer the hosts good competition and claim a victory at the end of the day.
Unlike the Bombers, SLCU proved that they are the best team and hosts from the get-go. SLCU won the toss and decided to bat first. An intelligent move by the host as they were already familiar with the batting conditions. The Xpress attacked the SCLU batting from the start. Zipping deliveries by Lenin and Jahangir added some pressure to their opponents; however, fielding mishaps yet again let the Xpress down early in the innings. A quick pep talk by the captain and vice-captain helped the Xpress tighten their game.
SLCU dominated the Xpress as their veteran players smashed some excellent shots around the park and managed to post a formidable total of 209 in 35 overs.
The Xpress, who were trying to prove victorious needed to get to a good start. Adnan, the nimble wicket-keeper/batsman opened along with Dabir. Both looked confident, but failed to produce any runs as they got out cheaply. Lenin, Avi and Jahangir stepped up to the plate and tried to stabilize the inning, but in vain despite Jahangir’s half-century. There was some last minute effort from the middle-order and tail-enders, but at the end, the Xpress failed to come close to the winning target.
LVCC did not have enough resources in their camp to compete against a formidable SLCU batting line-up. The next trip will hopefully be victorious for the Xpress as they will be looking to carry a full team with their own teammates.

Match 1: Davis County CC versus Las Vegas Cricket Club
The team departed from Vegas at mid-morning and arrived in Salt Lake City, UT in record five and half-hours. Most of the players did not get any rest from the night before and showed signs of fatigue on the field. Upon arrival, the Davis County CC welcomed the visitors. Avi, the captain, won the toss and decided to bat first. The pitch condition was seaming and quick, making it difficult for the batsmen.
Ankit and Lenin opened for the Xpress and showed good form. Luck did not favor the Xpress as they lost quick wickets in the morning session. Ankit was the first to get out as he fell victim to a direct hit. Lenin stood ground and showed excellent technique with the bat despite the fatigue. A miscued shot ended his innings making way for the captain. Jahangir and Avi put on an excellent display of great batting as they put on a 60 plus runs partnership.
Jahangir’s wicket proved to create a chain reaction as the Xpress lost quick wickets in the span of seven overs. Fatigue played a big role in the collapse as the middle-order failed to produce good shots. Despite the collapse, the Xpress managed to post 115 runs in 24.1 overs. Avi was the lone ranger who stood solid and remained not out scoring 42 runs.
The Xpress started strong in their bowling attack. The Bombers showed signs of weak batting as they could not score many runs off the bat in the early spell. Despite the strong bowling attack, the Xpress did not help their cause as extras eased the chase for the Bombers. Series of overthrows, dropped catches and wides caused some frustration; however, sub-standard umpiring by the hosts gave a different impression for the visiting team. The Bombers were struggling to reach the posted target and therefore the umpires hesitated to give several plumb leg-before wickets in the process.
LVCC showed great heart despite carrying a half-strength team with only 9 players at their disposal. At the end of the day, they felt robbed of their victory and were hoping to see some justice the following day as they geared up to play Salt Lake Cricket Union.

SLCU played the Davis Bombers Saturday, August 27th at James Woodward Park in Layton. The 30 overs match proved to be much better than the format of fifteen overs, Layton Bombers like to play. Day was pretty well spent but some great Cricket was on display today.
SLCU brought their B team due to past games were being one sided, and SLCU had beaten the Bombers on all previous meeting by large margins. From SLCU Rahid who gave a splendid performance for SLCU. The Bomber's came up short with only 9 players due absent of Steve, and Nick Hooper.
We had a late start due to field being wet from earlier rain; match was scheduled to start at 09:00 hours.
Bombers innings started out with several wickets falling fairly quickly, due to thunderous bowling by Rajesh, and team captain Nasir. Both opening bowlers from SLCU held Bomber to only nine runs in first six overs. Raza who is one of Bomber most steady stroke player took a yorker from Nasir on his right toe and retired early.
Hasan Bombers best all round player paired up for another great partnership of 97 runs. Hasan scored 59 runs. The Bombers total was a 150 for 27 overs a respectable 5 runs per over rate.
In return SLCU had a good start, and appeared to be, on track to overtake the target of 150. However, good bowling by Hassan, and Iain, the best bowler of Bomber managed to take a quick wicket of Saeed, and then SLCU Jeremy played a good inning, and scored 17 runs with one six, and four to his total, before he lost his wicket.
Rahid managed to score 38 runs with the help of Azhar who pitched in 17 of his own runs. Sikander contributed 22 runs to the SLCU total.
SLCU, defeated the bombers even with their B team by three wickets on hand Jegdev of SLCU perhaps Utah best leg spiner took three wickets, and he was able to grab four catches. Rajesh and Nasir with two wickets each.
